I read a magazine today for the first time in months.
I find it difficult to decide which one to buy nowadays as they either seem to be aimed at childless, young women or middle-aged / old women and I sit somewhere in the middle, but eventually I decided on Cosmopolitan which came in a pack with Company.
I read Company first and it was so awful that I would have got more enjoyment from chucking my two pound coin down the drain.
Firstly it was all just about fashion which I find so boring. I was never really into it when I was younger (unless you count Buffalo Boots!) and now that I know my clothes are going to be covered in snot and Weetabix by lunchtime I care even less.
The definition of fashion is ‘a popular trend’. Apparently the pages of this magazine are full of people modelling these ‘popular trends’ but I would honestly rather walk around naked than wear most of it.
I can just see all the top fashion designers sat around a table in fits of laughter whilst talking about what utter monstrosity they can create next, knowing that soon everyone will be rushing out to buy it. Imagine the power that comes with knowing it’s up to you to dictate what will and won’t be ‘a popular trend’?!
Maybe I am just getting old and can’t see the ‘fun’ in it anymore but there are a couple of reasons why I have a problem with high fashion.
Firstly is the fact that the clothes are made to fit borderline anorexic women / girls. The message that this is sending out to our younger female generation is so wrong and now that I a mum to a little girl it concerns me even more.
Secondly is the way in which things are only designed to be ‘fashionable’ for one season. If you are seen wearing it when it’s past it’s (very short) shelf-life then you will have committed fashion suicide and risk seeing a photo of yourself in the ‘so last season’ section of magazines. I would never buy something that was only going to last me for one season, even if I could afford to, I wouldn’t. It’s just a waste of money.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not completely anti-fashion. I don’t go to the supermarket in my pyjamas and I do enjoy buying new clothes but I don’t go and consult a magazine before deciding what to buy.
It’s not my intention to offend anyone who is really into fashion, each to their own and all, and feel free to rule me out as clueless for having more pairs of leggings then shoes, but I just don’t see why people are so easily led when it comes to being told what to wear.
Anyway I will stop ranting now because here are some highlights from the magazine:
Number one we have how to be a ‘cool customiser’! Seriously why would anyone wear that around their neck?!
Number two we have ‘stiletto nails’. WHY?!
Number three we have a really flattering outfit, or not.
and Number four, what I am clearly missing in life. A ‘trend friend’!
Does anyone agree with me or am I just old and past it?!

I hear you. I am personally a big fan of the jeans comfy t-shirt combo, with an occasional foray into leg gins and a tunic top. I am a mum though, so I’m allowed to have mum fashion, so there !

Becoming a mum has definitely changed my views on what to wear! There is no point in wearing anything that nice anymore as it just gets covered in snot and weetabix! x

Oh Blimey I think I’d probably cause some serious damage to myself with those nails! I like to think I dress “classicly” (is that. Word?). I do like some trends but then won’t splash out on it because it’s usually a passing one. I prefer to buy something with a classic cut that’ll always stay in fashion. So I do like to be in vogue but not a complete trend follower… If that makes sense!

I know, they are lethal! It totally makes sense, I do like some of the things are end up in high street shops from the catwalk but some of it is just so ridiculous! I have just re-read this post back and I do sound like such an old, boring mother! I’m not even 30 yet! x

I totally agree with you, I got sucked in by a subscription offer (£1 an issue, bargain!) for Marie Claire. I generally read about 10 pages in the middle, the rest (all the fashion and beauty stuff) just annoys me too much! Once the subscription runs out I’ll be cancelling it. I’m sticking to my mum’s uniform of jeans and t-shirt. I’m definitely not a ‘yummy mummy’!

I completely agree with you, which is why I don’t buy those magazines. I have no idea what they are thinking when they send pictures to print. Are there really woman who look like that – no.

hahaha I used to buy so many magazines but now I don’t just because I really can’t afford to buy all the clothes in the magazines and I also agree with you that to be honest I feel too ‘old’ for most of it. I much prefer to buy things for Mads than myself, and also if I do go out shopping I go with what I like now rather than what is ‘in fashion.’ If it is fashionable then great! x

Howdy!
Well.. those mags always have been and always will be full of a load of guff. I love clothes and experimenting with what I wear but there is a difference between fashion and style. Knowing what suits you and having fun with it is what’s important. You can make a nod towards current trends without spending loads. Acessories are the key. Even if you’re in a tee and jeans, add some earrings etc and you can funk it up whilst still being functional!
