I hate to admit it but the only things I pay insurance for are my car, my iPhone and my iPad.
I pay my car insurance because if I don’t then I am breaking the law and I pay my gadget insurance because my Apple products are like my second babies. In other words, insuring them is ‘essential’.
I almost wish that life and home / contents insurance were required by law, as if they were then I would have them by now.
I have been meaning to get contents insurance since moving into my house two years ago and life insurance since becoming a parent but for some reason, I never get around to sorting it out.
My uninsured living room…
I think if I owned my home then I would without a doubt have it insured as there is so much that could go wrong with the building but because we only rent, I keep telling myself that it doesn’t matter because we don’t own anything that ‘valuable’.
This was until I asked Googled it and found an article saying that even if you don’t own anything that valuable, the entire value of everything in your house still adds up to thousands. When I think of it like that, it does make me realise that even though I don’t have a big expensive telly, we do have four furnished rooms and losing it all in a fire would be devastating.
Then there is the risk of burglary. Unfortunately this is a reality for a lot of people these days, my dad has been burgled twice and we have lived in two houses that have been broken into. The first time was terrible for Dad2BabyInsomniac as he had two motocross bikes stolen – they weren’t insured.
That should have been a lesson to us to make sure we always insured everything but stupidly, it hasn’t been.
Writing this has made me realise how important it is though and I am going to sort some out this week.
At least it is easy to find the best price with sites like comparethemarket.com
How about you?
Do you have home insurance?
