I never did the whole backpacking thing when I was a teenager. In fact, other than a months holiday in Florida I haven’t actually been anywhere outside of Europe. The whole idea of traipsing around the world carrying a backpack and a huge risk of diarrhoea just never really appealed to me. It seemed like a lot of hard work.
Of course it is a lot easier to travel these days, thanks to websites like www.fly.co.uk who allow you enter your chosen destination and then do all the work for you by searching through various companies to find you the cheapest flights.
It is amazing how we have any destination in the world at the touch of our fingertips these days and although I might not want to take full advantage and go around the world, I do love going on holiday.
My Dad used to have a really good job when I was growing up so we were lucky enough to go on two holidays a year, ski-ing at Christmas and Greek Island villas in the Summer, I have so many great memories from all of these holidays.
That’s me on the right with my dad and little sister when we were on a ski-ing holiday in Austria.
I have also spent quite a lot of time in Spain. Dad2BabyInsomniac and I actually moved out there permanently in 2007. We left rainy England certain that we wouldn’t miss a single thing about it and had the best Summer enjoying the sun whilst watching footage of the floods that were going on back in the UK but then after about six months we decided to return.
I missed things that I didn’t think I would, even the cold weather! I am glad I did it as I am now content living in England, it’s not perfect but it’s where I feel at home.
And when we do get a sunny day, we appreciate it so much more!
How about you?
Are you a backpacker?!

I loved travelling. I’ve never had that feeling of living in the moment since – just deciding what I wanted to do each day and where I wanted to go when I woke up. I hate English winters. I’d definitely be happy to live somewhere warmer, but I don’t think I could ever move too far away from family… so I’m probably stuck here ; )
