Vomit and Twitter

Friday night started off like any normal night, Iyla went to bed without any problems and I was just about to go to sleep when I heard her making weird noises through the monitor. I went running into her room and was met with a cheesy pasta vomit explosion, she has never been sick as an older baby before and she was sat there trying to wipe it up with her muslin, bless her little heart.

I had been dreading this day because vomit is not one of the nicest things in the world, in fact other than poo it is last thing you would want soaking into your carpet but thankfully my motherly instincts kicked in and I was so concerned about reassuring her that it was okay that I didn’t even care about the fact that warm sick was soaking into my top. Even Dad2BabyInsomniac, who HATES sick did an amazing job at cleaning it all up, even if he did do it whilst making retching noises!

In the middle of the disaster scene I did what I would usually do at such a time and tweeted about it. Something along the lines of ‘Oh my god, Iyla has just puked everywhere. This has never happened before’ and the response I had made me realise how much I love Twitter. Not only did everyone offer support that night but people even asked me how she was the next morning.

I discovered Twitter when I was pinned to the sofa all day feeding Iyla, I had got bored of asking Google why my baby wouldn’t sleep and nothing changed on Facebook as frequently as I needed it to so I thought I would give it a go. I expected it to just full of celebrities ‘status updates’, little did I know that it would change my life.

Within weeks I had discovered a whole network of mums who were going through exactly the same things as me, I just wish I had known about it in the first few weeks when I had been awake all night. Having someone to tweet at 3am would have made the time pass a lot quicker.

Since I started blogging I also use Twitter to share links to my posts and to find out about upcoming blogging events but firstly it will always be a place to chat with other people. Some of these people I have now met in real-life, some I am going to be meeting in the next few months and some who I will never meet but it doesn’t matter because they know as much about me as my real-life friends.

I would recommend Twitter to any new mum, there is always someone there no matter what time of day or night and when you are a new mum that is such a nice thing to know.

And thank you to everyone who helped me on Friday night, I really appreciate it.

Luckily after a night of puking she woke up feeling back to normal!

Nothing worse than puke – possibly one of the worst parts of parenting. Last Easter my youngest vomited for 3 days – it was horrid.

Ah what a lovely post. I’m glad she’s ok now and hope any advice I gave you helped. I speak to many lovely people on twitter and recently met one of them and she was just as nice in the flesh. I get great support for my blog on twitter too , none of my real life friends seem to read it. So a big Yeah! for the power of twitter!

Haha! I love that your first instinct was to tweet about it. I sometimes worry I’ll be in the middle of having sex or something, and will go ‘Ooh, I liked what you just did then, hang on a minute while I tweet that’…

Glad to know I’m not the only one :-)

    Hey,

I’ve only just signed up to twitter and still don’t quite get it. How did you go about finding other mums and people that you would be interested in getting to know? It all seems a bit overwhelming to me at the moment!

I know exactly what you mean. When my daughter was born and I was struggling to feed her, I got far more support on twitter than in real life (if you know what I mean). It’s always nice to know that there’s somebody there no matter what time of day.

Glad that your daughter is better now.

I think they should tell you about Twitter when you’re pregnant! It’s a life saver in the early weeks!

I don’t think I would have survived the early months without twitter! I know I have done more than my fair share of ‘why won’t my baby sleep?!’ tweets. K has been sick today and of course I’ve tweeted about it too, it’s nice to get the get well soon tweets :)
